Uganda

One year ago, we prayed for this

This is what the Lord has done.

“Some people taking loans are living in [metal] sheets as homes. And you wonder, ‘How are they there with their children?’ So I am praying, as we give them loans and try to bring transformation, we look back and say, ‘This is what the Lord has done spiritually, socially, and economically.’”
– Pastor Stephen Barasa, Partner Ministry Leader of Deliverance Church Kiteezi

Last April, in the first monthly meeting with Deliverance Church Kiteezi in Uganda, the team prayed the TOLI program would bring holistic transformation to people living in extreme poverty – that the church would relentlessly seek the welfare of its neighbors and witness lives transformed in Jesus’ name.

One year later, looking back with gratitude, we can say: this is what the Lord has done.

Today, there are 63 TOLI clients in Uganda, supported by two TOLI Social Workers and a dedicated committee of pastors and volunteers. Through the program, single mothers are sending their children to school, families are replacing leaking roofs with proper sheeting, widows are gaining tools for their farms to flourish, and more people are becoming part of the local church.

It hasn’t been without hardship. There have been challenging election seasons, business displacement, and unexpected loss. But through it all, God has used His people – and three simple tools – to transform lives.

1. Business Training

“I’m 30 years old, and I’ve never had training before. I’m so grateful. I’ll be at the training all three days!”
— Josephine, grocery store owner, Uganda

Entrepreneurs like Josephine are incredibly capable; they often just lack access to the training needed to grow and sustain a business. That’s why, before receiving a microloan, every client completes TOLI’s Business Basics Course – a 12-lesson program covering marketing, pricing, dreaming big, and ethics.

This, too, is part of what the Lord has done this year. He’s opening doors for learning, dreaming, and possibility.

1. Microloans

After completing business training, TOLI clients apply for a microloan (average $200) and, once approved, receives them in the form of an asset or good needed to run a business. Over the next 12–18 months, they repay the loan – allowing those same resources to be ‘recycled’ to another entrepreneur in the same community.

Through small but powerful loans, the Lord has transformed lives in Uganda:

  • For Josephine (pictured above), a loan meant strengthening her grocery store. With increased inventory came more customers, greater income, and a growing ability to provide for her family.

  • For Sylvia Nakalyango, it meant building a home of brick instead of piecing together shelter from metal sheets.

  • For Sylvia Nabagala, it sparked new confidence. Someone believed in her, trusted her, and affirmed that she is capable of running a business.

  • For Moses (pictured below), it has meant restored dignity in his work.

Pictured: Moses used his microloan to build a raised surface for drying his coffee beans, improving their quality.

3. Christian Discipleship

And throughout it all, TOLI Social Workers and Partner Ministry leaders keep their eyes fixed on Jesus. Christ is at the center of the work. As TOLI Social Workers collect loan repayments, they also speak truth – reminding each person of their identity in Christ.

This year, 11 clients received their first Bible, and five have become new members of Deliverance Church Kiteezi.

Launching Uganda

All things new

“Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” – Isaiah 43:19

Praying over a woman and her family in Kiteezi, Uganda, who are stuck in a cycle of material poverty.

RE-INTRODUCING TOLI-UGANDA. God knows all our unknowns. His sovereignty is unmistakably woven into the story of TOLI’s new partnership with Deliverance Church Kiteezi in Uganda.

Deliverance Church Kiteezi is part of a network of over 660 churches throughout Uganda. Our paths first crossed in 2022, not in Uganda, but in Kenya, through a Regional Conference with Development Associates International (DAI) – a Colorado Springs-based ministry that provides global leadership training.

Through prayer, meetings, vision trips, and more prayer… what began as a leadership conference blossomed into a full TOLI partnership to transform communities in Uganda with the Gospel and microloans.

On April 5th, that vision officially launched when Deliverance Church Kiteezi hosted its first-ever TOLI Business Basics Course. The room was full of eager volunteers, TOLI staff members, and future TOLI clients – all gathered to learn about budgeting, marketing, leadership, and the incredible possibilities that come with a microloan. After five days of training, each participant received a certificate of completion to mark the beginning of their journey with TOLI.

And God is at work! At the end of the course, Nicholas Wafula, a Partner Ministry leader in Uganda, shared the Gospel. He summed up TOLI’s mission in Uganda by sharing how God not only cares for clients' physical needs (with microloans), He cares for their spiritual needs. In that moment, one future client stepped forward – giving his life to Christ.

A new chapter is beginning in Uganda. Please pray for Deliverance Church and the lives they will touch through the program.

INTRODUCING OUR NEWEST TOLI-US TEAM MEMBERS.

JACK SENTZ. Jack joins TOLI as Program Associate in the US office, where he'll help expand our program's impact and capacity. As an entrepreneur himself, with a heart for the Lord, Jack is passionate about bringing holistic transformation to people in material poverty.

Here's a quick Q+A to get to know Jack better:

  • What drew you to TOLI? I love how TOLI’s program seeks to walk the journey of faith in Jesus with clients while simultaneously meeting an immediate need. The material and the spiritual aren’t thought of as two different things. At TOLI, we want to see our clients' entire lives change for the better, not just their financial position.

  • What is a random fact about you? My fun fact for life is that one time I rollerbladed 100 miles in a day, from Buena Vista to Colorado Springs.

  • What is your favorite Bible verse? Colossians 2:20, “Therefore, since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belong to it, do you submit to its rules?"

CHELSEA CHARLES. Chelsea joins TOLI as a part-time Administrative Assistant. With extensive ministry experience overseas, Chelsea brings her heart for the nations and for administration to the TOLI team. Hear more about her heart for the Lord in a Q+A

  • What drew you to TOLI? What attracted me to TOLI was its ministry structure and the way it seeks to uphold the dignity of those it serves. The ministry empowers people to use their God-given gifts and talents to better their lives and the lives of their families and community. I love that this is all done in the name of Jesus and is a way to lead people to Christ!

  • What is a random fact about you? I love the ocean... like LOVE it! I enjoy the mountains where I live, but the beach is my happy place.

  • What is your favorite Bible verse? My favorite verse is Psalm 73:26 – “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
